She's got everybody's problems they just Drop em off as they drive by They don't even care if she understands They don't understand when she cries Well I've held her here beside me and we Laughed at the thunder and light I didn't even care if she understood Everything just felt right But you never hear the woman you are She sings from a perfect heart I am one room in a house that's too big And my back gets tight when I start to think The northern lights and the spinnaker Ripple out from my brain in laser rings But you never hear the woman you are She sings from a perfect heart A perfect heart Well there's always tomorrow And there's always tomorrow Yeah there's always tomorrow And there's always tomorrow But you never hear the woman you are She sings from a perfect heart Yeah you never hear the woman you are She sings from a perfect heart

Just Suppose 03:06
Just suppose I listen while you talk I listen while you talk I listen while you talk Just suppose I didn't watch the clock I didn't watch the clock I didn't watch the clock Just suppose we saw things eye to eye never doubted or denied We saw things eye to eye Who is this woman I thought I knew? Who are you now that I'm wrong? Who is this vision I saw by the bay well, She's stolen a place in this song Just suppose I saw your face in the sea Your hair fell through the trees Your skin touched like the breeze Just suppose I wrote your name in the sky And now you're asking why I'd write your name in the sky Who is this woman I thought I knew? Who are you now that I'm wrong? Who is this vision I saw by the bay well, She's stolen a place in this song na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na Who is this woman I thought I knew? Who are you now that I'm wrong? Who is this vision I saw by the bay well, She's stolen a place in this song Just suppose

To stake a claim on the holy land Where the ashes of the ghosts still lie We came in search of an acre of our own Maybe a home On Manitoulin Island That woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes From South Bay to the Little Current Bridge You know that I'll be back again Cause that woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes Alive in my eyes Feel the grass on the back of my neck As we lay on the shore One day, one hand to hold And she's quiet here, contented Quiet in her mind. There's a hush in her soul On Manitoulin Island That woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes From South Bay to the Little Current Bridge You know that I'll be back again Cause that woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes Alive in my eyes Alive in my eyes, oh On Manitoulin Island That woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes From South Bay to the Little Current Bridge You know that I'll be back again Cause that woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes Alive in my eyes On Manitoulin Island That woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes From Gore Bay to the Lighthouse Point You know that I'll be back Cause that woman's dreams are still alive in my eyes Alive in my eyes

ABCDEFG, 123, geometry Who'd a known that stuff would come around? You took your time with each new day To come across in a different way You reached so many people in this town Now it's time to go, All you need to know Is don't be sad The best teacher I ever had No more staring at the clock dragging it's hands like big rocks Through PTA's and other lame events You stood up for the children's rights, fought when no one else would fight You taught a lesson to the government Well now it's time to go All you need to know Is don't be sad The best teacher they ever had Don't be sad You're the best teacher I ever had

So bloody tired this morning You had to go I didn't heed the warning Why didn't I know? That I'd be missing you I'd be missing you So bad Oh yeah I'm missing you I'd be missing you so I thought I'd lost you I called out your name and Just when I needed someone But you never came And now I'm missing you Yeah I'm missing you So bad Oh yeah I'm missing you Yeah I'm missing you so bad. Didn't I give you everything? (I was so wrong) I didn't give you anything (It was me all along) (Sha la la, ooh sha la la la) (Ooh) Didn't I give you everything? (I was so wrong) I didn't give you anything (It was me all along) So bloody tired this morning You had to go Closed my ears to the warning Why didn't I know? That I'd be missing you I'd be missing you So bad Oh yeah I'm missing you Yeah missing you So bad I'll still be missing you Yeah missing you So bad Oh yeah I'm missing you Yeah I'm missing you so So bloody tired this morning You had to go And now I'm missing you I'm missing you so.

To smile, the end of the world To ask her, and answer Crawl from my skin to be sure Maybe a snake could entrance her I'm drunk like the colour of your hair To ask her, and answer With sanity and smarts to spare Somehow the honesty masks her And it's midnight, subtlety I need this Tavern door young woman, Good friends, No threats Walking on the earths lips To ask her, and answer Tune in and take sips The calendar is the master It's midnight, Anxiety she sees this Supper table girl, Strangers, No threats Doesn't mean I'm in love Doesn't mean I want to follow you home Doesn't mean I've never felt this way Doesn't mean I won't Now it's high noon, Showdown, Winnepeg. All dream all care, All sing...

Starsinger 04:12
So cast off Draw in all the lines and head out The harbour shrinks away Sailing, late evening sun Softly Whispering up the masts on hallyards Of red and range light green Main sail The voyage has begun Starsinger Bring me the northern star Cause I am where you are Connected To everything that's here Impassioned To the point of moonlit tears Singing For the stars to come Starsinger Bring me the northern star Cause I am where you are Starsinger Starsinger Starsinger Bring me the norther star Starsinger Bring me the northern star Cause I am where you are

about

It's 20 years ago now that "Adam" was released at a party at the Casbah in Hamilton.
The CD features an incredible cast of musicians, enlisted by producer Carl Jennings at Westmoreland recording in (then) Burlington, Ontario. I had worked with Carl on the "Adam and Annette" album a couple of years earlier, and was a fan of his band "Freedom Train".
Carl had a simple motto for this recording "f**k live", and it was a good mantra to have. It was all about the song, no regard was given to whether or not the it could be performed live somehow, it was simply about fleshing out the essence of each tune. We brought in many instruments and players, a different band for every track, sometimes a different genre of music for each track.
We recorded and re recorded, I wrote some of the tunes right there in the studio, and we meditated on the sound of every song at great length. It was an intense session.
We recorded "Adam" on digital ADAT tape, a medium that kind of bridged the gap between analogue recording and digital recording (on computers). It was like recording on pro-tools with a blind fold on. You had to feel your way and edit with your ears. We even went so far as to bounce everything to reel to reel tape at mix-down. Carl was absolutely determined to get the best sound possible, but also to get the feel of the album absolutely perfect.
We sent the final mixes off to Hank Williams at Mastermix in Nashville for mastering.
When people asked me what kind of songs I wrote, I would say "landscapes". I was really interested at the time in doing what landscape painters did with paint, but with music. I started with a song called "Manitoulin Island" which had originally been released on the Adam and Annette album, and continued with "Starsinger" a song about my dads sailboat. The chord progression in that tune was found by laying down on a dock in a harbor and listening to the halyards dinging and donging against the masts in the wind.
Eventually I decided that the album would also be a series of open letters to my closest friends and family. There is a song to my mom about her retirement, a song to my then girlfriend about how she had awoken me from an emotional coma, a song to my best friends new born baby daughter, etc. All the things that I couldn't find it in myself to say, I would write a song about. So the record is very personal to me as well.
"Adam" launched my musical career in a way. It showed me that I was capable of making something very good and satisfying on my own as a musician, and because of Carl Jennings dedication to the project, also inspired me to learn how to record in my own home studio. I have produced a number of projects now. Thanks Carl.
